3DAS · Real projects · FDM printing
A complete large-scale FDM build for Into the Unknown of Gdańsk, presented at SPIEL Essen 2026. Around three months of printing, fitting, smoothing, painting and logistics.

The challenge
Large display projects combine digital preparation, production choices, assembly, surface quality and transportation. 3DAS produced and finished the physical figure for the client. This does not imply authorship of the original character design or its fictional universe.
Behind the build
Eight key steps in the process, illustrated with photos of the actual completed figure.

We reviewed the geometry of the supplied digital model, including details that needed support, fragile features and potential joins. At this scale, planning the sequence of work matters just as much as printing itself.

A figure this large could not be printed as a single FDM part. The model was divided into sections, each requiring print orientation, supports and structural choices.

Each printed segment was part of a much larger assembly. Reliable long prints and quality checks were important before moving on to fit and finishing.

Individual parts were prepared, test-fitted and joined. With a tall multi-part model, small alignment errors can accumulate, so fit checks are essential.

After assembly, seams and visible layer transitions required repeated manual preparation and sanding. The goal was a cohesive finished sculpt rather than a visible collection of prints.

The armour, costume, sword and base received careful surface treatment and paintwork. Close-up photos show the textures and colour details.

The completed figure had to survive the journey to the exhibition. Transport involved two large crates with contents weighing approximately 110 kg in total.

The project was displayed at the Into the Unknown stand, where visitors could experience the full scale of the finished figure.
